Q.Case Study : Strontium titanate is a rare oxide — a natural mineral found in Siberia. It is used as a substitute for diamond because its refractive index and critical angle are 2.412.41 and 24.5∘24.5^\circ respectively, which are approximately equal to the refractive index and critical angle of diamond. It has all the properties of diamond. Even an expert jeweller is unable to differentiate between diamond and strontium titanate. A ray of light is incident normally on one face of an equilateral triangular prism ABC made of strontium titanate. Answer the following questions based on the above :

(a) Trace the path of the ray showing its passage through the prism.
(b) Find the velocity of light through the prism.
(c) Briefly explain two applications of total internal reflection.
(OR)
(c) Define total internal reflection of light. Give two conditions for it.

Part (a): normal entry →\to 60∘>24.5∘60^\circ>24.5^\circ so TIR at the second face; v=1.24×108 m s−1v=1.24\times10^8\ \text{m s}^{-1}; TIR is used in optical fibres and reflecting prisms.

Part (b): TIR = full reflection into the denser medium; needs denser→\torarer travel and i>θci>\theta_c.

  1. Path of the ray. The ray falls normally on face AB, so it enters without bending and travels to the opposite face. In an equilateral prism it meets the second face AC at an internal angle of incidence equal to the refracting angle, 60∘60^\circ. Because 60∘60^\circ is greater than the critical angle θc=24.5∘\theta_c=24.5^\circ of strontium titanate, the ray undergoes total internal reflection at AC. The reflected ray then strikes the third face BC normally and emerges undeviated (a 90∘90^\circ turn overall, as in a totally-reflecting prism).
  2. Velocity of light in the prism.

    v=cn=3×1082.41=1.24×108 m s−1.v=\frac{c}{n}=\frac{3\times10^8}{2.41}=1.24\times10^8\ \text{m s}^{-1}.

  3. Two applications of total internal reflection.
  1. Optical fibres — light is guided along a thin glass fibre by repeated TIR, used in communication and medical endoscopy. …
