An array is a collection of elements of the same data type stored in consecutive memory locations and referred to by a common name. Instead of declaring many separate variables, an array lets a program hold and process a whole list of related values efficiently.

Each element is accessed by a subscript (also called an index) written in square brackets. The rules for writing subscripts are: the subscript must be an integer (a whole number or an integer expression), it must not be negative, and in C indexing starts at 0 - so the first element of an array a of size n is a[0] and the last is a[n-1].
