The internet is a worldwide interconnection of millions of computers through a complex web of networks — in effect a "network of networks" that provides an inexpensive, public medium of communication. It grew out of ARPANET, a network started in the 1970s by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the United States; use spread from the military to government, then to educational institutions, and the network finally became public in the early 1990s.

Today the internet is used chiefly for two things: to communicate — exchanging business and personal information through services such as e-mail, chat and e-commerce — and to share resources such as files, information and services stored on computers everywhere.
