A transponder is the transmitter-receiver combination in a satellite that amplifies the received signal and translates its frequency. Its block diagram is a straight signal chain from left to right. The Receiving antenna picks up the 6 GHz uplink signal and passes it to a Low Noise Amplifier, which boosts the weak signal with minimum added noise. The amplified signal goes to a Mixer, which is also fed by a Local Oscillator (LO) at 2 GHz; the mixer subtracts this to translate the 6 GHz signal down to 4 GHz.
