Wi-Fi is the trade name of the wireless local-area-networking (WLAN) technology defined by the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. It lets computers, phones and other devices join a local network and reach the internet without any cables. Wi-Fi uses the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands to carry high-speed data over a range of up to about 100 metres, and each band is divided into fixed-bandwidth channels; the common standards (802.11 a/b/g/n) differ in their frequency band, maximum data rate and range.

To stop the many devices sharing a channel from talking over one another, Wi-Fi uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA): each transceiver listens before it transmits, and if the channel is busy it waits a random time and tries again until the channel is free.
