Match each abnormal leaf on the shoot to a named deficiency symptom - chlorosis, interveinal chlorosis, necrosis, scorched margins, mottling, malformation, die-back - and then to the element in Table 7.10.

How to label the diagram.

  1. Start from the healthy, evenly green leaf and compare every other leaf with it.
  2. Uniform yellowing of an older, lower leaf - chlorosis; nitrogen (or magnesium) deficiency, because these mobile elements are withdrawn from old leaves first.
  3. Yellow leaf with the veins still green, on a young leaf - interveinal chlorosis; iron deficiency (iron is immobile, so young leaves suffer first).
  4. Brown or grey dead patches - necrosis; manganese deficiency gives grey spots, and severe potassium or magnesium deficiency also produces dead patches.
  5. Yellow, scorched leaf margins - potassium deficiency (yellow edges to leaves, premature death).
  6. Green and non-green patches - mottling.
  7. Dull green or purplish leaf on a poorly grown shoot - phosphorus deficiency.
  8. Small, malformed leaf - zinc deficiency (malformed leaves). …
