Vegetative propagation needs no flower, gamete or seed. Any vegetative organ that carries a bud (or can form adventitious buds) and enough stored food can, once it is separated from the parent, put out roots and shoots and become a new plant. Three organs do this in nature:
- Roots: the swollen storage roots of sweet potato, asparagus and dahlia develop adventitious buds that sprout into new shoots.
- Leaves: the leaf margins of Bryophyllum, Kalanchoe and Begonia bear notches in which tiny plantlets form; they drop off, root and grow.
- Stems: modified stems store food and carry dormant buds, the rhizome of turmeric, the tuber of potato (its 'eyes' are buds) and the bulb of onion, each giving an independent shoot system. …
