Electric potential is the work per unit charge to bring a test charge from infinity to the point; integrating E drE\,dr for a point charge gives V=kq/rV=kq/r.

The electric potential at a point P, at distance rr from a point charge qq, is defined as the work done per unit positive test charge in bringing it from infinity to P, against the electric field of qq, without acceleration:

V(r)=−∫∞rE⃗⋅dl⃗V(r) = -\int_{\infty}^{r} \vec E \cdot d\vec l

The electric field due to the point charge at a distance xx is (radially outward, along the same line as dl⃗d\vec l, so E⃗⋅dl⃗=E dx\vec E \cdot d\vec l = E\,dx):

E(x)=14πε0qx2E(x) = \frac{1}{4\pi\varepsilon_0}\frac{q}{x^2}
