The ovary is an endocrine gland as well as a gamete-producing organ, and secretes two principal steroid hormones. Estrogen (chiefly estradiol) is secreted by the cells of the growing Graafian follicle; it is responsible for the development and maintenance of female secondary sexual characteristics (breast development, fat distribution, voice pitch), stimulates growth and repair of the uterine endometrium during the proliferative (follicular) phase of the menstrual cycle, and triggers the LH surge that causes ovulation. Progesterone is secreted mainly by the corpus luteum (the structure formed from the ruptured follicle after ovulation); it prepares and maintains the endometrium in a secretory state suitable for implantation of a fertilized egg, inhibits further follicular development and ovulation during this period, and, …
