The Law of Segregation, also called the Law of Purity of Gametes, explains why a trait that vanishes in F1 reappears in F2. Mendel reasoned that the two alleles for a character never physically blend inside the hybrid; they remain distinct entities that are recovered intact in F2, even though only one of them (the dominant one) is visible at the F1 stage.
