Q.Describe structure of root hair.
A root hair is a delicate, tube-like, unicellular extension of an epiblema cell, with a two-layered wall (outer pectin, inner cellulose), thin peripheral cytoplasm, a large central vacuole, and a selectively permeable...
Step 1. Origin. A root hair is a cytoplasmic prolongation (extension) of a single epiblema (root epidermal) cell, arising only in the root-hair (maturation) zone of the root, well behind the meristematic and elongation zones nearer the tip.
Step 2. Overall form. Each root hair is a colourless, unbranched, tube-like structure roughly 1 to 10 mm long. It is delicate and short-lived (ephemeral), being continuously replaced as the root grows and matures.
Step 3. Wall structure. The root hair has a two-layered cell wall: an outer layer composed of pectin and an inner layer made of cellulose. This wall is freely permeable to water, letting the first step of absorption (imbibition, section 6.4a) happen readily across its entire surface.
Step 4. Internal structure. Inside the wall lies a thin peripheral film of cytoplasm, containing organelles such as mitochondria, surrounding a single large central vacuole that occupies most of the cell's interior volume. The plasma membrane lines this cytoplasm, immediately inside the wall.
Step 5. Functional contrast. Unlike the freely permeable cell wall, the plasma membrane is selectively permeable — it is this membrane, not the wall, that actually controls which substances (and how much water, via osmosis) are allowed into the living cytoplasm.
A root hair is a colourless, unbranched, short-lived, tube-like cytoplasmic extension (1–10 mm) of a root epidermal (epiblema) cell, with a two-layered wall (outer pectin, inner cellulose), a thin peripheral film of cytoplasm containing mitochondria, a large central vacuole, and a plasma membrane that (unlike the freely permeable wall) is selectively permeable.
