Water absorption by roots is influenced by: available soil water content, soil temperature, soil aeration (oxygen availability to roots), and concentration/osmotic potential of the soil solution.

Root water uptake mainly depends on soil moisture, soil temperature, soil aeration, and the concentration of the soil solution.

Four important factors affecting the rate of water absorption by plant roots are: (1) Available soil water — the amount of water present in the soil and readily accessible to roots; absorption is efficient when soil water content is near field capacity, and declines as soil dries toward the wilting point. (2) Soil temperature — moderate/warm soil temperatures favour faster root metabolism and lower water viscosity, promoting absorption, whereas very low temperatures slow root metabolic activity and increase water viscosity, reducing absorption. (3) Soil aeration — adequate oxygen availability in soil pore spaces is essential for the active respiration and metabolic processes that drive water/ion uptake by root cells; poorly aerated (waterlogged) soils impair absorption. (4) Concentration of the soil solution — if the soil solution has a …
