Worked Examples · Example 4.1

Q.One mole of an ideal gas is initially kept in a cylinder with a movable frictionless and massless piston at pressure of 1.01 MPa, and temperature 27 °C. It is then expanded till its volume is doubled. How much work is done if the expansion is isobaric? (R = 8.314 SI Units)

Vi = RTi/Pi = 8.314×300/(1.01×10⁶) = 2.494×10⁻³ m³; W = pVi = 1.01×10⁶ × 2.494×10⁻³ = 2.494 kJ.

For an isobaric process W = PΔV = P(Vf − Vi). Since the volume doubles, Vf = 2Vi, so ΔV = Vi and W = pVi.

Find Vi from the ideal gas equation for the initial state (n = 1, Ti = 27 °C = 300 K): …
