Whether interference is constructive or destructive at a point is fixed by the path difference between the two coherent waves arriving there, expressed as a whole or half number of wavelengths.

For two coherent sources of light producing an interference pattern, let Δ\Delta be the path difference between the two waves reaching a point, and ϕ\phi the corresponding phase difference (ϕ=2πλΔ\phi = \dfrac{2\pi}{\lambda}\Delta).

Constructive interference (bright fringe): occurs when the waves arrive in phase, reinforcing each other, i.e. when the path difference is an integral multiple of the wavelength:

Δ=nλ,n=0,±1,±2,…⟺ϕ=2nπ.\Delta = n\lambda, \quad n = 0, \pm1, \pm2, \dots \quad \Longleftrightarrow \quad \phi = 2n\pi.
