Consider a plane wavefront incident on a plane reflecting surface , making angle with the surface normal. By Huygens' principle, every point on the wavefront is a source of secondary wavelets. As different points of reach the mirror at different times, each launches a secondary spherical wavelet that, on striking the mirror, is reflected back into the same medium (since the mirror does not transmit light). Drawing the secondary wavelets from each point on the mirror where the incident wavefront has arrived, and constructing their common tangent (envelope) after time , gives the reflected wavefront .
