Huygens' principle applied to a plane wavefront hitting a reflecting surface.

Let a plane wavefront ABAB be incident on reflecting surface MNMN at angle of incidence ii, with AA striking the surface first. While the secondary wavelet from AA travels to a point on MNMN where BB's wavelet arrives (taking time tt), BB travels a distance BC=vtBC = vt to reach the surface at CC. By Huygens' principle, AA acts as a new secondary source and, in the same time tt, its wavelet spreads out to radius AD=vt=BCAD = vt = BC.

The reflected wavefront is the tangent plane CDCD from the common surface point CC to the wavelet from AA. In right triangles ABCABC and ADCADC:

  • BC=AD=vtBC = AD = vt (equal radii)
  • ACAC is common …
