A genetic map (linkage map) is a diagrammatic representation of the relative positions, order, and distances between genes (or genetic markers) along a chromosome, constructed from the frequency of recombination observed between them in genetic crosses. Since the frequency of crossing over between two linked genes is roughly proportional to the physical distance separating them, recombination frequency is used to estimate map distance, expressed in map units or centimorgans (cM), where 1 cM corresponds to a 1% recombination frequency.
