Figure — Diagram of the four chromosome types classified by centromere position, drawn side by side

Chromosomes are classified by centromere position into metacentric, submetacentric, acrocentric and telocentric types.

The position of the centromere divides a chromosome into two arms -- a shorter arm (p-arm) and a longer arm (q-arm) -- and determines the shape the chromosome takes on as it is pulled to the poles during anaphase. The four types, with their labelled features, are:

  1. Metacentric -- the centromere lies exactly in the middle, so the two arms are of equal (or nearly equal) length; at anaphase the chromosome appears V-shaped, with the centromere at the apex of the V and the two equal arms trailing behind.
  2. Submetacentric -- the centromere is slightly away from the centre, giving one arm distinctly shorter than the other; at anaphase it appears L-shaped, with a short arm and a long arm meeting at the centromere.
  3. Acrocentric -- the centromere lies very close to one end, so one arm is very long and the other extremely short (sometimes bearing a small satellite); at anaphase it appears J-shaped. …
