Ploidy changes underlie crop-plant gigantism, new-species formation, and seedless fruit.

  1. Increased vigour and organ size ('gigas effect') -- polyploid plants often show larger leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds, and greater overall vigour than their diploid counterparts, a trait exploited in crop and ornamental plant improvement (e.g. tetraploid/larger-fruited varieties).
