Sutton and Boveri showed chromosome behaviour in meiosis parallels Mendel's laws, concluding chromosomes are the physical bearers of genes.

Walter Sutton and Theodor Boveri, working independently around 1902, observed strong parallels between the behaviour of chromosomes during meiosis and the behaviour of Mendel's hereditary 'factors' (genes), and proposed the chromosomal theory of inheritance. Its salient features are:

  1. Chromosomes, like Mendelian factors, occur in pairs in diploid somatic cells, and this pairing behaviour parallels the paired nature of Mendelian factors for a trait.
  2. During meiosis, the members of each homologous chromosome pair segregate, so that each gamete receives only one chromosome of the pair -- directly paralleling Mendel's Law of Segregation, where each gamete receives only one allele of a gene pair.
  3. Different homologous pairs of chromosomes assort independently of one another during meiosis, paralleling Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment for genes on different chromosome pairs.
  4. Of each homologous pair, one chromosome is inherited from the male parent and one from the female parent, exactly as one allele of each gene pair comes from each parent, which maintains chromosome number and genetic continuity across generations. …
