Since a diagram cannot be rendered here, the structure of a typical (metaphase) chromosome is described part by part, as it would be labelled:
- Chromatid: each chromosome at metaphase consists of two identical sister chromatids (formed by replication of the DNA during S-phase), lying side by side and joined together at one point.
- Centromere (primary constriction): the narrow, constricted region where the two sister chromatids are held together; its position (median, sub-median, sub-terminal or terminal) determines the chromosome's shape (metacentric, sub-metacentric, acrocentric or telocentric).
- Kinetochore: a disc-shaped protein structure present on the centromere, to which the spindle fibres (microtubules) attach during cell division, enabling the chromatids to be pulled to opposite poles.
- Chromonemata: the coiled thread-like structures within each chromatid that carry the genes, embedded in a matrix.
- Telomere: the specialised, physically and chemically distinct terminal region at each end of the chromatid; it caps and stabilises the chromosome end, preventing it from fraying, fusing with other chromosomes, or being recognised as damaged DNA. …
