Worked Examples · Example 6

Q.Using the same marks distribution as Worked Example 5 (50 students, classes 0–10 to 40–50 with frequencies 4, 10, 16, 12, 8), draw the frequency polygon, showing how it is closed to the X-axis at both ends.

Step 1 — Compute the class marks. For classes of width 10 starting at 0: xi=lower+upper2x_i = \dfrac{\text{lower}+\text{upper}}{2}, giving 5,15,25,35,455, 15, 25, 35, 45 for the five classes 0–10 through 40–50.

Step 2 — Plot the class marks against frequencies. (5,4),(15,10),(25,16),(35,12),(45,8)(5,4), (15,10), (25,16), (35,12), (45,8).

Step 3 — Close the polygon to the X-axis. Immediately before the first class (0–10) is the imaginary class (−10)(-10)–00, with midpoint −5-5 and assumed frequency 00; immediately after the last class (40–50) is the imaginary class 5050–6060, with midpoint 5555 and assumed frequency 00. Adding the points (−5,0)(-5,0) and (55,0)(55,0) and joining every point in sequence with straight lines closes the figure onto the X-axis at both ends, making it a genuine closed polygon.
