Consumer protection is not the responsibility of the government and business alone; consumers themselves must act responsibly to protect their own interests. The following are four important responsibilities of a consumer:
1. Be Quality-Conscious: A consumer should always insist on good-quality, standardised products carrying certification marks such as ISI (for electrical/industrial goods), Agmark (for agricultural products) and Hallmark (for gold jewellery). Refusing sub-standard goods discourages the sale of inferior products.
2. Beware of Misleading Advertisements: Consumers should not blindly believe exaggerated or false claims made in advertisements. They must verify the real quality, price and utility of a product before buying it.
