Parthenogenesis is development from an unfertilised egg; in honey bees it produces haploid males, while fertilised diploid eggs become females.

Step 1. Definition of parthenogenesis. Parthenogenesis is the development of an individual from an egg that has not been fertilised by a sperm.

Step 2. The haplo-diploid system. In honey bees, sex is determined not by a distinct pair of sex chromosomes but by the number of chromosome sets an individual receives. Females are diploid (2n=32), arising when an egg is fertilised; males (drones) are haploid (n=16), arising when an egg develops without fertilisation, by parthenogenesis.

Step 3. Gamete formation. The queen produces haploid eggs (n=16) by ordinary meiosis. Males, being already haploid, produce haploid sperm (n=16) by mitosis rather than meiosis, since there is no homologous pair to reduce.

Step 4. Female caste determination. All fertilised (diploid) eggs have the potential to become either queen or worker; which caste they become is decided nutritionally, not genetically — larvae fed royal jelly develop into fertile queens, while others become sterile workers. …
