As water moves radially across the root from the epiblema toward the xylem, it can travel by two routes. The symplast pathway is the one in which water passes from one living cell to the next through plasmodesmata — the fine cytoplasmic connections linking neighbouring cells — effectively moving through the living cytoplasm itself rather than through the non-living cell walls.
