Step 1. Each ovary is differentiated into a central medulla and an outer cortex, with the cortex covered externally by a layer of germinal epithelium.
Step 2. The medulla is loose connective tissue (stroma) carrying blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerve fibres.
Step 3. The cortex, more compact and granular, is packed with numerous ovarian follicles at different stages of maturity: primordial follicles (a primary oocyte with a single flat follicular-cell layer), primary follicles (multilayered cuboidal follicular cells), secondary follicles (with an added theca layer, oocyte growth, and estrogen-secreting granulosa cells), and the mature Graafian follicle (with a fluid-filled antrum, membrana granulosa, theca interna/externa and corona radiata). …
