A buffer is a high-input-impedance, low-output-impedance, unity-gain isolation stage.
When a high-impedance source is connected directly to a low-impedance load, the load draws current from the source and weakens the signal (loading effect). A buffer amplifier, typically a common-collector (emitter-follower) stage, is inserted between them. Its high input impedance draws almost no current from the source, and its low output impedance drives the load easily, while the voltage gain is about one.
