Linear S.H.M. is exactly the projection of a uniform circular motion onto a diameter (the reference-circle method, §5.7). In that circular motion ω is the real angular velocity. When we project to the line, the same ω appears in x = A sin(ωt + φ) and decides how fast the oscillation repeats (ω = 2π/T).
