Q.What is a power diode?
[!TLDR]
A power diode conducts large forward current with low loss and blocks large reverse voltage.
An ordinary signal diode is a simple p-n junction meant for small currents. A power diode is designed to handle high power: it conducts a large forward current with very little forward voltage drop (low power loss) and, when reverse biased, withstands a large reverse (blocking) voltage. To achieve this it uses a p+ n- n+ structure with a lightly-doped n- 'drift' layer that provides the wide depletion region needed for high reverse-voltage blocking.
[!ANSWER]
A power diode is a power semiconductor diode that conducts a large current in the forward direction with very little power loss while blocking a large voltage in the reverse direction.
