A 1:1 pulse transformer magnetically couples the gate pulse from the low-voltage firing circuit to the SCR gate, isolating it from the high-voltage power circuit.
Pulse transformers are used in the firing circuits of SCRs and TRIACs to give electrical isolation between the gate control circuit and the power circuit. Isolation is needed mainly because the power circuit may be connected to a high-voltage ac supply while the firing circuit is usually a low-voltage control circuit; a direct connection would expose the control circuit to the high power-side voltage.
