Pulse transformers are used in the firing circuits of thyristors (SCRs and TRIACs) to give electrical isolation between the gate control circuit and the power circuit. This isolation is needed mainly because the power circuit may be connected to a high-voltage AC supply while the firing circuit is a low-voltage control circuit. The transformers used are generally 1:1 with two windings having low winding resistance and low leakage resistance.
