Circuits that supply the correct, isolated gate signals to switch power devices; isolation is by pulse transformer (SCR/TRIAC) or opto-coupler (MOSFET/IGBT).
Every discrete controlled power device has three terminals — two main terminals and, with one main terminal, a control (gate) terminal. A gate drive circuit must satisfy the characteristics of that control terminal to turn the device ON and OFF efficiently. Because the devices in a converter are located at different points and different voltage levels while being driven from a common controller, electrical isolation is required, and separate isolated power supplies are often needed for each device.
