Circuit: An opto-coupler (opto-isolator) consists of an infrared LED placed optically in line with a phototransistor, both enclosed in one package. The gate signal from the control circuit (for example a microcontroller) drives the LED through a series resistor on the low-voltage control side. The phototransistor is on the high-voltage power side, with its collector supplied from and its emitter output taken through a series resistor to the gate and source/emitter of the MOSFET/IGBT power device.
