Applications of DNA fingerprinting: forensic investigation (identifying suspects/victims from biological evidence like blood, hair, semen at a crime scene), paternity and maternity disputes (establishing biological pa...

DNA fingerprinting, based on individual-specific repetitive DNA sequences, has wide applications from forensics to conservation.

DNA fingerprinting (developed by Alec Jeffreys) exploits highly variable, individual-specific repetitive DNA sequences (VNTRs/minisatellites) to generate a unique banding pattern for each person (except identical twins), analogous to a physical fingerprint. Its major applications include: forensic science, where minute biological samples (blood, semen, hair, saliva) left at a crime scene are compared against a suspect's DNA profile to establish or rule out their presence, now a standard tool in criminal investigations and courts; paternity/maternity testing, comparing a child's DNA profile with that of the alleged parent(s) to confirm or exclude biological parentage; identification of unidentified or badly decomposed bodies, including victims of mass disasters (accidents, disasters, war), by matching DNA against relatives' samples; wildlife forensics, used to detect illegal poaching and trade of endangered species by matching seized animal products to a species or individual; population a …
