The nucleosome is the basic repeating structural unit of chromatin. It consists of a core of eight histone protein molecules — the histone octamer, made of two copies each of histones H3, H4, H2A and H2B — around which approximately 200 base pairs of double-stranded DNA is wound in about 1.65 left-handed superhelical turns.
