f-block elements fill (n-2)f orbitals; lanthanoids and actinoids differ mainly in oxidation-state variability, radioactivity, and shielding of f electrons.

f-block elements are those elements in the periodic table in which the last (differentiating) electron enters an (n-2)f orbital. This block comprises two series: the lanthanoids (14 elements, Z = 58 to 71, following lanthanum, filling the 4f subshell) and the actinoids (14 elements, Z = 90 to 103, following actinium, filling the 5f subshell).

Differences between lanthanoids and actinoids:

  1. Oxidation states: lanthanoids predominantly show the +3 oxidation state; actinoids show a wider range of oxidation states (+3 to +7), being less consistently confined to +3.
  2. Shielding: the 4f orbitals of lanthanoids are buried deep within the atom and are well shielded from the surroundings; the 5f orbitals of actinoids extend further out and are less effectively shielded, so they participate more in bonding.
  3. Colour: lanthanoid ions are generally colourless or only palely coloured; many actinoid ions are more intensely coloured. …
