Lanthanoid contraction: As atomic number increases across the lanthanoid series (Ce to Lu), each additional electron enters the inner 4f subshell rather than an outer shell. The 4f orbitals shield the nuclear charge very poorly (due to their diffuse, penetrating shape), so the effective nuclear charge experienced by the outer electrons increases steadily with each element, causing a small but cumulative, steady contraction in atomic and ionic radii across the series. This is called lanthanoid contraction.
