Ellingham diagram = ΔG∘\Delta G^\circ (per mole O2O_2) vs T graph for oxide formation, used to predict feasibility of thermal reduction.

An Ellingham diagram is a graphical plot of the standard Gibbs free energy of formation (ΔG∘\Delta G^\circ) of the oxides of various metals (expressed per mole of O2O_2 consumed) against absolute temperature (T). It is widely used in extractive metallurgy to compare the relative stability of different metal oxides and to decide which reducing agent (metal or carbon) can be used to extract a given metal from its oxide.

Two important features of Ellingham diagrams:

  1. Most of the lines have a positive slope (they rise upward with increasing temperature), because the reaction 2M(s)+O2(g)→2MO(s)2M(s) + O_2(g) \rightarrow 2MO(s) consumes gaseous oxygen, decreasing the entropy of the system; since ΔG∘=ΔH∘−TΔS∘\Delta G^\circ = \Delta H^\circ - T\Delta S^\circ and ΔS∘\Delta S^\circ is negative here, ΔG∘\Delta G^\circ becomes less negative (rises) as T increases. …
