Self-induction is a coil opposing changes in its own current; mutual induction is one coil inducing emf in a nearby coil due to a changing current in it.

Self-induction: When the current through a coil changes, the magnetic flux linked with the same coil changes, and by Faraday's/Lenz's law an emf is induced in that coil which opposes the change producing it (opposes the growth or decay of current). This property of a coil is called self-induction, quantified by its self-inductance LL: ϕ=LI\phi = LI, and the induced (back) emf is ε=−LdIdt\varepsilon = -L\dfrac{dI}{dt}. It is this property that opposes any sudden change of current in a circuit.
