The surviving film contracts, snapping the loose thread into a circular arc.

With films on both sides, the thread is pulled equally both ways and stays slack, in whatever lazy curve it happened to lie. Break one side: the remaining film, behaving like a stretched membrane, contracts to minimise its area and pulls the thread toward itself everywhere along its length. A flexible thread pulled with uniform tension per unit length settles into a circular arc — so the thread springs taut, bowed into the broken side, enclosing the largest possible area on the broken side (equivalently the smallest film area on the surviving side).
