Worked Examples · Example 5.2

Q.Two magnets with the same dimensions and mass, but of magnetic moments μ₁ = 100 A m² and μ₂ = 50 A m² are jointly suspended in the earth's magnetic field so as to perform angular oscillations in a horizontal plane. When their like poles are joined together, the period of their angular S.H.M. is 5 s. Find the period of angular S.H.M. when their unlike poles are joined together.

T₁/T₂ = √[(μ₁−μ₂)/(μ₁+μ₂)] = √(50/150) = 1/√3; with T₁ = 5, T₂ = 5√3 = √75 = 8.660 s.

The moment of inertia I is the same in both cases (same magnets). With like poles together the effective moment is μ₁ + μ₂ = 150; with unlike poles together it is μ₁ − μ₂ = 50. Since T = 2π√(I/μB), …
