Relaxation oscillators generate non-sine waveforms (square, triangular, sawtooth) by repeatedly charging and discharging a timing capacitor.
Unlike a sinusoidal oscillator, a relaxation oscillator does not rely on a resonant frequency-selective network. Instead it uses the charging and discharging of a capacitor through resistors, switched by a device such as a 555 timer, to abruptly change states.
