Male gametophyte = pollen tube carrying two male gametes; siphonogamy = pollen-tube-mediated fertilization.

On reaching a compatible stigma, a pollen grain germinates: its intine bulges out through a germ pore and elongates into a long, thin pollen tube that grows down through the tissue of the style towards the ovule. Within this growing tube, the larger tube cell provides the cytoplasm and its tube nucleus typically remains near the growing tip, guiding tube growth. The smaller generative cell, carried along inside the tube, divides mitotically (either in the pollen grain or within the growing tube) to produce two non-motile, haploid male gametes. This entire structure — pollen tube with tube nucleus and the two male gametes — constitutes the mature male gametophyte of a flowering plant. …
