The mature embryo sac has 7 cells and 8 nuclei arranged in three groups within the ovule.

The embryo sac (female gametophyte) develops inside the nucellus of the ovule from a functional megaspore through three successive free-nuclear mitotic divisions followed by cellularisation, giving the common Polygonum-type embryo sac. At the micropylar end lies the egg apparatus, made of one large egg cell flanked by two smaller synergid cells (which help guide the pollen tube). At the opposite, chalazal end lie three small antipodal cells. In the centre is the large central cell containing two polar nuclei, which later fuse (or fuse with a sperm) to form the primary endosperm nucleus.
