The anther wall in angiosperms is typically made up of four layers: the outer epidermis, endothecium, one or more middle layers, and the innermost tapetum, which directly surrounds the sporogenous tissue/pollen sacs. The tapetal cells are densely cytoplasmic and metabolically very active, and they play a crucial nutritive role: they supply nutrients, hormones, enzymes and other materials required for the growth and development of the microspore mother cells and the resulting pollen grains within the anther locule. The tapetum also contributes precursor materials (including sporopollenin, a highly resistant biopolymer) for the formation of the outer exine layer of the pollen wall, and it degenerates once pollen development is complete, its contents being absorbed by the maturing pollen grains. …
