After fertilisation, each ovule structure gives rise to a corresponding seed structure: egg becomes the embryo, nucellus (if persistent) becomes perisperm, and the two integuments become the two seed coats.

During seed formation, structures within the ovule are transformed after double fertilisation. The egg cell, after fusing with a male gamete, develops into the embryo, the young plant within the seed. The nucellus, the tissue surrounding the embryo sac, in most seeds is consumed during development but, if it persists as a nutritive tissue, is retained as the perisperm.
