A test cross reveals an unknown genotype by crossing it with a homozygous recessive individual and observing the offspring ratio.
A test cross is performed by crossing an individual showing a dominant phenotype but of unknown genotype with a homozygous recessive individual for the same trait. Since the recessive parent contributes only recessive alleles, the phenotypes of the offspring directly reveal the gametes (and hence the genotype) produced by the unknown parent. If all offspring show the dominant phenotype, the unknown parent is homozygous dominant (pure); if the offspring appear in a 1:1 ratio of dominant to recessive phenotypes, …
