A test cross (F1 × homozygous recessive) reveals the F1's genotype from the ratio of offspring phenotypes.

An F1 individual showing the dominant phenotype could genotypically be either homozygous dominant (e.g. TT) or heterozygous (Tt) — the phenotype alone cannot distinguish them since the dominant allele masks the recessive one.
