Evaluate an ECG step by step - rate, rhythm, P, P-R, QRS, S-T, T - comparing each with the normal trace in Fig. 8.26.

Suggested plan.

  1. Rate - count the time between two R peaks; at 0.8 s per cycle the rate is 75 per minute. Above 100 is tachycardia, below 60 bradycardia.
  2. Rhythm - are the R-R intervals equal? An irregular spacing suggests an arrhythmia.
  3. P wave - a small upright wave before every QRS shows normal atrial depolarisation from the SA node.
  4. P-R interval - about 0.16 s; a longer interval means the impulse is delayed at the AV node.
