Learn to hear and interpret the heart sounds, the breath sounds and the Korotkoff sounds with a stethoscope.

Suggested plan.

  1. Parts - earpieces, binaural tubing, and a chest-piece with a flat diaphragm (high-pitched sounds) and a cup-shaped bell (low-pitched sounds). Note that the earpieces point forward, into the ear canals.
  2. Heart sounds - over the left side of the chest hear the first sound 'lubb' (the tricuspid and bicuspid valves closing as ventricular systole begins) and the second sound 'dub' (the semilunar valves closing as ventricular diastole begins); one lubb-dub is one cardiac cycle (section 8.14). Count for one minute to get the heart rate and compare it with the radial pulse.
  3. Breath sounds - over the back and front of the chest, listen to the soft rushing sound of inspiration and expiration; ask the partner to breathe deeply. …
